Eligibility for Iron Infusions
This service is available to:

  • Pregnant women in their 2nd or 3rd trimester.

  • Postnatal women up to 7 weeks after delivery. For women beyond 7 weeks postnatal, this service will need to be provided by a GP, as it falls outside of a midwife's scope of practice.

  • Women with recent blood tests showing a ferritin level of less than 30ng/ml and/or a hemoglobin (HB) level of less than 120g/l.

  • Women who have not responded to or are unable to tolerate oral iron supplements.

What to Expect

  • A small plastic tube (cannula) will be inserted into a vein in your arm.

  • The infusion will be administered over 30–60 minutes.

  • Your observations (vitals) will be monitored throughout the procedure.
